Q&A with a Bruja from Brooklyn: Tarot and Spellwork

Q & A with a Bruja from Brooklyn - Tarot and Spellwork.png

¡Hola! I'm excited to start off the blog post series "Q&A with a Bruja from Brooklyn" on my website. The idea is to help educate and inspire beginner witches who may have some questions regarding their paths while instilling confidence. For this first post, I will be answering questions on using tarot card with spell work.

Q. Why would anyone use tarot cards for their spellwork? I thought it was only for divination readings.

A. Tarot cards are more than just for readings! What's wonderful about tarot cards are the vast types of imagery and symbolism displayed on them. Depending on which deck you use, each tarot deck can indicate a theme. For example, you may work with a deck filled with animals only (perfect if you're using animal guides as part of your spell work). Or maybe a deck that matches closely with your path as a green witch when honoring the Lord and Lady and the Pagan seasons (a good example is the Green Witch Tarot by Ann Moura). Aside from the images, tarot cards can be a perfect tool for when you need to perform rituals on the go. This is helpful, especially if you're in an area where space is limited. Or, if you want to avoid prying eyes from checking on your witchcraft briefcase. The last thing you don't want is to be pulled over by airport security and questioning your cauldron, candles and herb kits (hey, it could happen).

Q. I have a deck that I use for readings. Can I also use it for tarot spells?

A. Ideally, you do not want to use the same deck for readings when conducting tarot spells. The energies from performing your readings are quite different from using tarot cards for spell work. Understand that tarot decks have their level of sensitivity and personality. Mixing the energies would result in confusing the tarot deck's purpose. So it's important to make sure you talk to your tarot decks and let them know (with permission) you have the intention of using the decks for a particular purpose. As an example, I reserve my Golden Universal Tarot Deck by Lo Scarabeo for readings only. When I need to perform a tarot spell, I use the Witches Tarot Deck by Ellen Dugan. As with any type of work that requires energy, be sure to do a cleanse per session. You can use incense, palo santo or white sage and pass over the cards while asking your spirit guides to lift away any residual energy.

Q. Can you recommend any books/study material on how to use tarot cards with spells?

A. Of course! I do recommend reading Tarot Spells by Janina Renée and 365 Tarot Spells: Creating The Magic in Each Day by Sasha Graham.  If you're looking for tarot spells based on the zodiac sign lunar cycles, check out my free book Full and New Moon Zodiac Tarot Spells (under my bruja name Diamond Moonflower).
